The Masque of Black Death Akira Kurosawa’s Last Un-Produced Script Becomes an Animated Feature

An International Collaboration in Honor of the Japanese Master

(Hollywood, September 18, 2008) Lotus, Inc. announces the production of Akira Kurosawa’s, The Masque of Black Death. This full feature animation will be produced and directed by Lotus, Inc. in Japan, backed by a joint-force of international producers and the world’s leading Japanese animators and directors.

The Masque of Black Death is Akira Kurosawa’s last unknown script. Written in 1977, the script has never before been produced.

Lotus has engaged Japan’s best animators to produce artistry that goes far beyond the definition of “Japanese Animation” with striking and horrific visual environments never before seen on film.

In cooperation with Kurosawa Productions, Masque of Black Death is being produced by a joint-force of international producers including Lotus, Inc. (Japan), Lexicon Filmed Entertainment (US), Upside Down Entertainment (Singapore) and Harbor Light Entertainment (US). Masque of Black Death will be released theatrically in 2010.

Originally planned as a Russian film and sequel to Dersu Uzala, Masque of Black Death is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short novel, The Masque of the Red Death. The story takes place in the early 1900s in the Russian Empire where a fatal infectious disease ravages and kills most of the population leaving the rest consumed with fear. Masque explores the cruelty and selfishness of human nature when placed under extreme circumstances.
